The canoe: a unifying symbol with a historical anchor

FNEE's logo, created in 2021, is inspired by the rich history of the continent's Indigenous peoples and their influence on its development. Essential for travel, trade and exchange between peoples, the canoe provided the traditional means of transportation for First Nations, Métis and Inuit alike. Many of today's river routes were designed by Indigenous Peoples.

Dynamic symbol of reconciliation

The canoe, in constant motion on the water, is a way of moving towards other Nations, in order to create links, communicate and exchange goods and products. The dynamics of navigation mark not only progress, but also perseverance. For us, the canoe evokes both connection to the territory, networks of contacts and exchanges, and the encounter between two worlds – Indigenous and non-Indigenous.

Yellow and blue: the colours of a prosperous alliance

Our partnership between First Nations and civil society, embodied by HEC Montréal, is based on co-creation to serve the values and prosperity of Indigenous peoples. Yellow evokes both the sun and the Earth, representing First Nations, while our logo’s blue water represents HEC Montréal.

The Circle: a symbol of interconnection and the cycle of life

Our logo is in the shape of a circle, an important Indigenous symbol, representing the bonds of equality, continuity and community, placing all members together and encouraging exchange. Our programmes start with participants training in a circle. The circle links past, present and future generations. It also places human relationships in a wider context of relationships with animals, water, land, nature and Nations.

The midpoint: a marker of inclusivity

In the summer of 2024, following in the footsteps of HEC Montréal’s École des dirigeantes et dirigeants, FNEE adopted an inclusive logo by opting for the median point, in line with a desire for openness and greater representation of women leadership.

“Embark on the canoe and, together, we can build a prosperous, positive and autonomous future.”

We thank studio OnakÌ for developing our visual identity.
